Translating the "Developing for openBve"?

Postby alvinwong on Wed, 12th Aug 2009, 05:22

Dear michelle,

I now got interested to translate it into Chinese Hong Kong so that Hong Kong developers may have a deeper knowledge on developing those things (actually is that some Hong Kong people don't like to read or understand English). How do you think?

I read the blog entry "2009-07-15 (Wednesday)" that you are updating the homepage. Shall somebody also start translating them as soon as you've updated the homepage, so there will be more languages on the homepage as soon as you uploaded the new one.

Yours sincerely,
Alvin Wong

I originally intended for the homepage to be multi-lingual. However, I eventually decided against that for a couple of reasons:

  • The documentation is still not complete, and translating something that is not yet complete does not seem the wisest thing to me.
  • openBVE develops fast. If the translations are not kept up-to-date regularly, it would be best to remove them entirely instead of having outdated information around.
  • I work with a specialized software to create the homepage from a wiki-style code (of sorts). It might be difficult for others to work with, I think. (However, if my knowledge about web design was better, I would probably be working with a real one to faciliate easy editing directly in the web browser - but this is unfortunately not the case.)
Therefore, I think that if you want to translate parts, you should do so, but it seems not to be the best to store them here on the homepage. I would be glad to link to translations, though.

I agree what you say.

Translating sth uncompleted or sth which changes regularly isn't a good choice.

I think that you may just give us the "wiki-style code" files and we translate directly from this, and if the English is changed, the other languages may just put a warning like "This translation is outdated" but still able to be seen by the plubic.
