No, I'm running Windows Vista x32, and I'm not eating up a lot of RAM either.

Protected memory read or write error

Postby Gothpaladinus on Sat, 12th Sep 2009, 08:23

Hi all! I use the latest (1.2.1.3) version of openBVE under Windows 98 Second Edition, but I have a very, very large problem with it! I installed all the dependencies, copied all the dlls I need, and the program itself launches without any problem, but when I try to open any routes with any trains, it loads, and shows the errors when there are any, but after clicking Ignore and the game window appears, I get the same error:

OpenBve Error

I have even installed DirectX 9, but it still appears. What do I have to do to make openBVE working on my Win98 SE??? Any ideas? My computer's main parts: Intel Pentium 3 933 Mhz, 512 MB SDRAM, 40 GB HDD, ASUS V7100 (or what type) 32 MB VRAM, and the Windows 98 SE, but I don't have sound card in the PC, maybe that could be the problem?

DirectX 9 doesn't seem useful to openBVE as it uses OpenGl instead.

In fact, you should continue on http://openbve.freeforums.org/error-attempted-to-read-or-write-protected-memory-t969.html.

There is a way to disable sound, see http://openbve.trainsimcentral.co.uk/use/hidden.html.

If you still using 98, you should rather change to Windows 7, though there are also some problems using openBVE on it.
If I were you, I would have updated to (at least) Windows XP.

Many of the pages on the internet that deal with this message seem to point out a possible error in the .NET framework compiler. Assuming this is true, you could try these things:

If you are using Microsoft .NET, update to a more recent version but 2.0.

Alternatively, install Mono and then start openBVE from the command line. To do that, select Run... from the start menu, enter cmd, then enter cd "C:\Your openBVE path", then enter mono OpenBve.exe.

The only other explanation - judging literally from the error message - is that one of the external components, i.e. SDL, Tao, OpenGL, OpenAL, produced corrupt memory. In this case, I wouldn't know what else to do, but you could always try to update related drivers, i.e. graphics and sound.

Note that all of this is more like guessing than a real solution.

Well, the Route Viewer, the Object Viewer and the Train Editor runs perfectly, only OpenBve cannot. I tried to disable sound in the cfg file, but it didn't solve the problem. And regarding to the OS: Win 7 for Pentium 3 under 1 Ghz and a lesser-than-64-MB-VRAM-video-card?! You should read again the PC's details list...well XP could be OK, but until I only have an LG CD reader in the PC, and not a DVD writer, it could not be done...

The 2.0 is the latest Win98-compatitble version... Well, I'll try Mono, and if after installing it the problem still appears, I'll write again, but if it solves, I'll still report that to you.

I've upgraded to Windows XP SP3, and now it works well, thanks for your hint!

I'm getting this same message. I am running Vista, Service pack 2. Net Framework 3.5 SP1. The database structure on my PC is as shown to be necessary. Is there something else I need to do please?

It should be directory/folder structure, not database.

Had you tried compatibility mode? Try XP SP3

What a bad luck...
Try Mono instead of .NET :!:

Afraid that didn't work either. I thought I would uninstall the complete program and then do a reinstall to see if that cures the problem, but I can't see how to uninstall. There is nothing in the directory/file structure, neither is there anything in the list of programs in Start, nor is OpenBVE shown in Control Panel in the list of programs for uninstall. Can anyone help please?

openBVE doesn't need to be installed, and also uninstall.

Just simply delete the folder that openBVE locates in. But it may not be very useful, I think.

May I know when the message comes out?
