Ring as an object?

Postby Derryck on Wed, 9th Sep 2009, 21:29

Hello there,

I have a question: would it be possible to create a geometrical ring as a result of one command? I have a vision like this - the whole thing could be based on a cylinder command with a difference as follows: the cylinder command has a parameter for number of base portions, this stays the same for ring. Here goes the difference - while for cylinder we use "upper and lower" diameters, for ring these could be "outer and inner" diameters that would allow creating a ring of various wall thicknesses. Parameter for length stays the same as for cylinder. Your opinions?

Regards,
Derryck

Not possible. At least you would need 8 cylinders? Or use a series of vertices and faces.

At least rotation, translation and color holds up 3.
Problems, solutions, problems, solutions...
Tired on these, and trying to make openBVE train Exterior, then...
Problems... ###again### Crazy...

I just want to comment on the reason why I think that all of the sphere/ring/torus proposals that have been made have some practical issues.

First of all, there are simply too many kinds of shapes to allow for all of them by a single command. Someone wants a torus, the next one a sphere, the next one just a cut-out section of some shape... without any end to the possibilities.

The second reason is that working with textures would require precise definitions of the vertex arrangements, which I think are already complicated enough to comprehend for cubes and cylinders.
