open BVE on the iPhone & iPod Touch

Postby danelias92 on Mon, 19th Oct 2009, 07:21

Does anyone think it will be possible in the future to create open BVE for the iPod Touch & iPhone and distribute it for free in the App Store? :D

This is too far future, in fact. Someone else had suggested on mobile phone (Java) before, but not accepted...

No, I wrote Symbian S60 (v3/v5) instead of Java, and Michelle only rejected it because he thought that there is no .NET Compact Framework and OpenGL available for Symbian that would make the porting too hard. However, as I've already wrote it, there IS .NET Compact Framework and OpenGL available for S60v3/v5 in one software pack called Net60 (http://redfivelabs.com) that could make the porting easier and it could make its time much shorter, but additional (skilled in iPhone's and in Symbian's programming) programmers would be needed for this. But, if we could find some programmers that would agree the porting, it could be done! Now we should only have to find some, and the quest is complete then.

Opps! I can't remember.
But I can say, if any one make openBVE be avaliable on other platforms, Anyone would be happy.

I suggest the following:
NDS
PSP
Wii
Java
Web
(not necessary to response to this joke)

I suppose that Nintendo DS and Wii could be a good idea, and even PSP, however, Densha De Go is already available for it. As I already mentioned it, Java J2ME could be (nearly) impossible because of its 2 MB app size limit, and since OpenBve itself is 2-3 MB, no routes could be took into a JAR pack. As for a web version...hmm. Well, RealRailway (www.realrailway.com) could make some japanase routes simulated as Shockwave Flash Videos, but I wouldn't be sure if this could be done with fictional routes.

Ha, if anyone could rewrite it into Visual Java 2005, maybe funny.

For J2ME, is it possible to separate the routes and trains? The quality may not be too high, as the screen is small. (Only interior version will also be good, but I haven't made Java programs before.)

Web version, is it possible to use Java?

It would better to make a version for Windows Mobile, as that runs on superior hardware and is a more Windows-like OS - both of these would make porting easier and the result better. Also, there's already a flight sim for Windows Mobile, so it'd be nice to have a train sim too (if there isn't already one - I've never actually checked...).

Someone who knows Java can try translating the source code into it. Is making an applet of it possible?

One day we will be able to hook up to live signal boxes, and clever hackers could just play for real. There is endless possibilities. It seems the 'Watch with a Calculator' was something from the stone age these days.

It should also be made, but I wouldn't give it a larger priority than an iPhone or a Symbian port...

It's not as far flung as some may think. Some iPhones support OpenGL.

I would probably advise porting it to a native Mac app (Cocoa) first.
