Bad Frame Rate and Display Quality

Postby jakeboy on Sat, 3rd Oct 2009, 21:39

I wonder if anyone can advise me on either my PC setup or whether I should be investing in more up to date hardware. I use OpenBVE and get a frame rate of about 10-15FPS at best - sometimes as low as 3-5FPS. I also have a bit of flickering and many objects are distorted or very 'unreal'.

My PC has the following spec:

Motherboard - AS Rock M266A with Pentium 4 (2800MHz) Processor

Memory - 512MB RAM

HDD - 80GB

Video Card - NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 (128MB) [19" HP Monitor]

CMedia 8738 Sound Card

My PC has the same specifications as yours, so I could strongly advise you as follows:

1) Download Open BVE historic pack (openbve_historic.7z) from Michelle's site and unpack version 1.0.7.3;

2) If you decided to use the latest version, use the Window Mode only (not Full Screen)

3) In both cases, disable Vsync and use drawing distance as minimal as possible. If you have TSR programs
(those who appear in your systray), try to disable some of them (exception for antivirus, of course...)

Hope this helps,

Thanks so much for your advice. I have tried that and there does appear some improvement. I think it's time to save some money for a higher spec computer or to build one up.

I watched some OpenBVE videos on YouTube, particulalry the one with the new 323 refurbished 3D Cab. It's fantastic and so realistic. My BVE resembles something like a cartoon in comparison.
